All About Us
The Shallow Lake and District Figure Skating Club was formed in 1978.
We are a proud member of Skate Canada and Skate Canada Central Ontario.
We pride ourselves in offering top quality programming to our skaters no matter their passion. Because we offer an amazing CANSkate program which helps skaters learn the skills necessary for either hockey, figure skating or ringette, we changed our name to Shallow Lake Skating Club in order to encompass all that we are able to offer.
Programs We Offer
All skaters begin at the Recreational level which provides skating basics. Skate Canada understands that skaters want to attain different levels of achievement. Some want to learn how to stop, others want to be the next world champion, while others want to skate for the fun of it. The Recreational level is the best place to start regardless of your goal. The Shallow Lake Skating Club is happy to offer the following Skate Canada Programs.
CANSkate is a learn to skate program that meets the needs of skaters of all ages and introduces them to the fundamental movements of going forward, backward, stopping, turning, spinning and jumping. The movements are explored in six stages with badges awarded in the Senior CANSkate program for each stage. In most cases a skater can complete this program quickly. After completing the CANSkate program a skater can advance to STARSkate.
Skate Canada also offers programs for hockey and ringette players in CanPowerSkate, special needs skaters in the Special Olympics, as well as programs for those interested in Synchronized Skating or Competitive Skating
Involves four disciplines: Dance, Freeskating, Skills, and interpretive (soon being re-named Performance). Each discipline progresses through the following levels: Star 1-5 and Star 6-10 (coming soon) and Gold . (Dance also has a Diamond level)
In Freeskating, jumps, spins, and footwork sequences are applied to a Freeskate program as well as elements in isolation.
In Skills, footwork, edge patterns and turns in isolation are learned.
In Dance, set patterns are learned. Shallow Lake Skating Club is happy to announce that we now have a Male Partnering program for our older STARSkaters. This program will allow our skaters to stay within our own club to work on dances and not have to travel to other clubs.
Interpretive skating involves a program designed to interpret a piece of music. This program is being remodelled by Skate Canada and will have a new set of criteria in place for our skaters by September 2019
The patterns and dances of each discipline are evaluated on Test Days. On a Test Day a trained Judge evaluates the skater's ability and determines whether or not the skater is ready to move up to the next level.
STARSkate is further divided into "Rising Stars" (Skaters in Stage 6 until they pass their first dance test), Intermediate, and Senior. The RISINGStar program is unique to our Club. We offer this program as a bridge program between CANSkate and STARSkate so that the transition into the test program is more gradual.
